Update: A few people have requested some additional background regarding this post. The man in the photo is Frank De Clercq, head of the San Diego Firefighters Union. In 2011, De Clercq joined other union members outside local supermarkets in trying to block the collection of signatures needed to qualify the comprehensive pension reform initiative in the city of San Diego. De Clercq and other union members engaged in the scare tactic of telling voters who were signing the petitions that their identities would be stolen by those collecting signatures. De Clercq’s efforts failed, of course, and what became Proposition B eventually was passed by voters with 65.81% of the vote. Fast forward to 2013-2014, when he was prominently featured in TV campaign commercials for David Alvarez’s mayoral bid in which De Clercq claimed now-Mayor Elect Kevin Faulconer had stripped public safety personnel of their death and disability benefits during his time on the council. So one can only wonder what De Clercq’s placard would read today after he and his labor union boss cronies suffered another loss (the first being the pension reform initiative, Prop B) to their once-friend Kevin Faulconer. What do you think the sign would read?
