Can Republicans Break Up The Democratic Coalition ?

While it was fun to #LaughMyOssoff last night about the Democrats’ expensive (and failed) attempt to #Flipthe6th , here is a message for Republicans–this loss just hardened #TheResistance activists.

I believe that #TheResistance message is wrong–it offends Americans and tries to balkanize the American electorate.   #TheResistance would do well to look within the Democratic Party rather than to blame voters for being bigots.  Until it does, they will continue to lose elections in Republican-leaning districts.  While their message is wrong, their commitment is not. #TheResistance is on offense.  Republicans should be on offense, too.

The single best thing Republicans can do right now is to try to break up the Democratic coalition. The progressive wing of their party is making this about transgender bathrooms, taxpayer-funded abortions, confederate monuments, and race. They may gain traction if Republicans aren’t trying to open up the tent and inviting people of color,  gay people, first-generation Americans, union members, and young people to vote for and identify with the Republican Party.

While #TheResistance is browbeating white, male voters for having some sort of privilege, Republicans would do well to speak to voters outside our coalition about how free markets and smaller government offers greater prosperity for all of us, regardless of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or creed.

Some thoughts about how to do that:

1- Republicans don’t have to compromise principles to talk about the America we envision.
2- Republicans DO have to careful about our tone.
3- Republicans have to go places we have never gone before.
4- Any Republican can learn how to be an effective messenger.
5- We have to approach outreach with love in our hearts.

I’ll share more thoughts about each issue in future articles but today, I want to make one statement– #TheResistance is more committed to turning Americans against one another today than ever before.  President Trump showed us how to stop them.   Republicans should on on offense and open up the freedom and prosperity message to every American.
