Sam Abed, the former Mayor of Escondido, yesterday filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to run for the 50th Congressional District, currently held by Duncan Hunter.
SD Rostra reached out to Abed for a statement. He responded later in the day (this post was updated). “I am busy talking with grass-roots, civic and community leaders and my supporters, and I am grateful for the strong support I have already received for my campaign for the 50th Congressional district,” he said.
Other Republicans announced for or said to be considering a run for the seat include El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells, Temecula Mayor Matt Rahn, former San Diego City Councilmember Carl DeMaio, and retired Navy SEAL Larry Wilske. Former Congressman Darrell Issa was also recently discussed as a possible candidate.
