Board of Supes: Investigate ACORN

Today’s Board of Supervisors was well attended, by citizens and media alike.   The main topic was the launching of an investigation of local ACORN voter registration activities last year.   Supervisors Bill Horn and Pam Slater-Price brought the item to the agenda, and during discussion it was discovered that on top of a nearly 1-in-6 error rate in registration cards turned in by ACORN, 76 actual cards were turned over to Secretary of State Debra Bowen nearly a year ago, with no resulting outcome or prosecution.

There were no speakers against the motion.  Among the speakers in favor of the motion were Escondido councilman Sam Abed, Iraq veteran William “Bud” McLeroy, local Republican Party Chairman Tony Krvaric, and Assemblyman Martin Garrick.

The issue, of course, is not partisan, but rather one of right and wrong.  Yet, Krvaric had invited his counterpart, Democratic Party Chairman Jess Durfee to join him in calling for this investigation, but Mr. Durfee did not appear.  Similarly no representative from ACORN showed up.

Ultimately the Supervisors voted unanimously to support and encourage a full investigation of ACORN’s activities and specifically demanded to hear back from Secretary of State Debra Bowen about the 76 fraudulent voter registration cards turned in nearly a year ago.  The audience erupted in applause with Assemblyman Garrick committing to call for a full audit of how many state dollars have gone to ACORN in California, and demand that they receive no state dollars going forward.

All in all a great day, but only the first round of many more to come in investing ACORN’s rotten practices.
