Donna Frye won’t make a 3rd try for Mayor in 2012, a bombshell first reported by Liam Dillon at the Voice of San Diego. This is the “Other Shoe” people were waiting to drop, and VOSD says she will also endorse Bob Filner for the top City job. With the earlier exit of Chris Kehoe (reported first by SD Rostra on June 24) Filner’s road to official Democratic support is now much clearer. Private polling showed Frye immediately going into 1st place had she declared again, so that sound you hear is a major Sigh of Relief from both Republican and Democratic candidates! It is fair to say that the REAL race for SD Mayor begins today.
Well-informed political sources confirmed to SD Rostra that the 2012 contest would not really come into focus until the longtime Councilwoman (2001-2010) made her go/no go decision. Survey research suggests she is the strongest potential candidate Democrats could field. So yes, Rep. Bob Filner has reason to be happy today, but so do GOP hopefuls Nathan Fletcher, Carl DeMaio and Bonnie Dumanis. A Donna Frye candidacy would have taken the air out of the San Diego political room. Now everyone else is breathing again !
……THE VICTORY BEAR REACTS
The restless animals in the San Diego political zoo are MUCH calmer this morning as a result of this major development. But Please, ladies and gentlemen, another polite reminder … do not throw bread slices to the Victory Bear. He has, however, signified his own solid approval of Donna Frye’s big decision.
