Assemblyman Jones Supports Repeal of “Last-In, First-Out” Approach to California’s Teachers

Firing Great Teachers, “Are You Kidding Me?”

SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblyman Jones (R-Santee) today released an “Are You Kidding Me?” segment in support of Assembly Bill 1044 (Baker) that would repeal the “last-in, first-out” method for hiring teachers in California schools. Under California’s “last-in, first out” policy, school administrators are forced to lay off their most recent hiring when faced with a budget crisis. Assemblyman Jones says, “When we’re ranked 46th in education, we should be taking every step necessary to keep our most effective teachers where they are needed most. We need to fix this broken system so layoff decisions are made in the best interests of teachers and students.”

Unfortunately, the Assembly Education Committee held AB 1044 (Baker) in committee to study over the Legislative Session.
