Alvarez joins Mayor’s race; no done deal for Fletcher

San Diego City Councilman David Alvarez today announced he is running for mayor.

Alvarez on Twitter indicated what could be his campaign theme against fellow Democrat Nathan Fletcher…

I’m in. Filed my intent to run. San Diego needs a mayor who cares about the future of working families & all of our neighborhoods.

The Alvarez announcement makes both the Democratic Party and Labor Council endorsements not so much a done deal for former Assemblyman-former Republican Fletcher. In fact, it’s even more likely Alvarez held off a couple of days on his decision to run while he measured the probability of gaining support from the party and labor, in particular from progressives not so inclined to be trusting of Fletcher’s recent morphing into one of them.

Short of a surprise, the last “big name” yet to make a decision to run is Democrat Lori Saldaña, also a former member of the State Assembly. With the Democratic Central Committee poised to consider an appointment, she would need to move quickly. Her last Twitter update, three days ago, was not about the mayor’s race.
