Escondido Tackling Pension Reform
With four conservative members of the council, Escondido has already achieved a balanced budget, implemented E-Verify for city hiring and has created a draft Charter to eliminate the high costs of prevailing wage and PLAs. Now the city council is tackling pension reform. The goal is to create a two-tier system along with existing employees paying their full pension contribution.
Escondido Looking at Charter Status
North County -
Escondido, the only city in North County not to become a charter city is finally looking at the change. Considering the major projects that the city is looking at developing in the near future, including a Triple A ballpark for the Padres minor league team and a Marriott hotel on city land, the savings from eliminating prevailing wage in construction is enormous.
The North County Times article indicates that the initial hearing will be March 9th. However, Deputy Mayor Marie Waldron would like to try to get the charter to the ballot by the June election, if there is one, or on the next closest cycle.
Breaking News: Pfeiler Files for City Council
Current Mayor of Escondido, Lori Holt Pfeiler has just filed papers at the deadline to run for city council. Lori, who announced last year she would not be seeking re-election as mayor has decided to stay with politics. She joins a crowded field of 7 candidates vying for 2 council seats. Current incumbent, Marie Waldron is seeking re-election to her own seat, and the vacant seat is currently occupied by Councilman Dick Daniels, who is running for Mayor.
