If Isaac Cancels GOP Convention, Republicans have a backup plan
My experience as an American Red Cross disaster responder for the last 20 years has taught me to expect anything and to prepare for the worst. So when I see hurricane experts discussing whether or not Isaac (now a tropical storm but predicted to become a hurricane this weekend) will hit Tampa, Florida during next week’s Republican National Convention, I start assuming it will happen and back it up from there.
It made me wonder: if the convention gets cancelled, what happens to the nomination of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan as the Republican candidates for President and Vice President? Does the convention have to be rescheduled? What are the alternatives? Could the hurricane derail the whole process?
Steve Baric and the Partisan Democrat
Our conservative-minded friends up north at OCPolitical in Orange County (imagine them as OC’s version of your trusty SDRostra blog) have been writing lately about a term limits conundrum that’s occurred in their most populous city county seat, Santa Ana.
Three-term Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez, a Democrat, is seeking a legal ruling through a third party on whether or not a 2008 ballot measure in that city would guarantee her the option of running for a fourth term.
The third party who filed the suit, Alvarez’s appointed Santa Ana Parks and Recreation Commissioner Max Madrid, is being represented by none other than Republican Steve Baric — who serves as Mayor Pro Tempore of Rancho Santa Margarita, and vice-chair of the California Republican Party.
The Platform for California’s Future
This past weekend in Sacramento, an Embassy Suites room full of Republican activists, elected officials, and donors gathered to draft the 2012-2016 Platform for the California Republican Party.
Within a few hours, we emerged with a platform titled, “The Platform for California’s Future” which was supported by an overwhelming majority (25-2) of those on the Drafting Committee. Why the 2 “No” votes? Because two members feel that our party should continue to be pigeon-holed, maligned, divisive, and defined before our candidates across the state even have a chance to present their ideas to the voters.
