Republican Disenchantment

I’m disenchanted with the GOP, not because Republicans are nominating Donald Trump; but because the country’s Republican leaders are so out of touch with the electorate that — through their own ineptitude — they unwittingly created an environment accepting of him.

  1. Amen. Now, are those same folks going to die defending their right-of-way? (An old phrase used by the group of guys I “grew up” with.)

It seems to me that some of the more adamant NeverTrumpers have a choice to either “die”, or work for all Republican nominees.

  2. They may have created him, but he does represent a vibrant and energetic part of the Republican Party base – the small part that should never, ever, under any circumstance be allowed to assume power. To paraphrase Drumpf, “these are bad people.” Remember, even Senator Graham had to endorse Cruz. It’s that bad.

  3. Well said Barry. Let us all turn this disenchantment into actions to effect a change in the GOPe leadership to bring the party back to representing America and its citizens’ will of self determination.

  4. Well said Barry. I’d also add that they underestimated people’s willingness to take matters in to their own hands in an attempt to remedy the problems we see in D.C. I am a perfect example of that, I never saw myself as one that would run for office. But I’m so sick of how our government is representing me (and how party leadership is getting the wrong people elected) that I couldn’t stand by and rely on them any longer.

  5. Barry: The Republican establishment wasn’t inept. They knew what they were doing. The power, the committee chairmanships, and the money were more important to them than fighting Obama’s extreme socialist agenda. They rolled over and wet themselves like scared puppies rather than fight for the American people and the Constitution. It was easy for the average citizen to see and they didn’t like it. Have Duncan Hunter and Darryl Issa fought hard for conservative principles or did they go along with Boehner and his “give in” policies to get committee chairmanships and more power?

The average man in the street, blue collar working Republicans, Democrats, and Independents have been disgusted over the last 7 years at seeing the America they know and love get radically transformed. The borders are unprotected, illegal aliens are flooding the nation and stealing hundreds of millions in benefits that belong to the American people. Perverted sexual values are being shoved down people’s throats, the EPA and IRS are attacking businesses and conservatives, free speech, freedom of religion and the Second Amendment are under attack, the American military is being weakened, and people are struggling to make ends meet. People blame establishment politicians and they’re right. This is a populist rebellion against politicians and the establishment.

Ted Cruz allowed Trump to paint him as part of the establishment and position himself as a true outsider who will get things done. Smart strategy that worked for him. Has Trump changed from what he was before and will he do everything that he says he’ll do? Of course not.

But I’ll take Trump any day over Hillary Clinton who killed the Ambassador and ex-SEALS in Benghazi, looted $45 million by selling favors and access, and will continue Obama’s extremist agenda of destroying the Constitution.

  6. The signs were there. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2003, then the Tea Party now Donald Trump.

To the party leaders. Take time to retail politic. Gather signatures for your own initiatives. Its amazing the kind of honest conversation you get from the cynical voters.

  7. Today’s “conservatives” (and liberals, of course) are far more the creatures of culture than politics.

  8. “Have Duncan Hunter and Darryl Issa fought hard for conservative principles?”

Bravo Dan. It takes a bit of courage as an elected member of the GOP to call out a sitting congressman. I for one am impressed. It’s a small group but there are now two of us not guilty of idolatry.

Don’t think the recent SANDAG vote would have been such an issue if our Mayors and Councilmembers were calling out congressmen, who winning their conservative districts by 40 points, were using their safe seats to boldly promote Republican principles and deliver tax reform.

  9. Eric: Many thanks to you, Brian Brady, Tony Kravric, and others for fighting like demons against the SANDAG tax. I appreciate you guys doing your job as principled conservative leaders regardless of the cost.

  10. Can we honestly say this nation is still center right? If not, then what happened and why was this not protected?

  11. I completely agree Barry. The Republican Party has been asking me to hold my nose and vote for the lesser of two evils for the last thirty years. Now they don’t seem to be able to take their own medicine.
If it wasn’t for Trump we would be looking at Jeb as the anointed, next in line candidate. Just like McCain Romney and the rest of the folks that run like they are Libertarians and then if elected, govern like Democrats.
Suck it up Republicans YOU CREATED THIS!!

  12. Frustration with the status quo is understandable. What’s not understandable (i.e., rational) is our response to it.
It’s as if voters, angry about being politically malnourished by the “establishment,” have suddenly, in retaliation, decided to go on a strict cyanide diet.
    “Ah, Bartleby! Ah, humanity!”

  13. Where it really shows that the GOPe (establishment) lost touch is that among a large segment of GOP voters (now mostly for Trump) they feel that the GOPe sold out to Obama. Where from people outside the GOP you hear that McConnell et al were obstructionists, the Party of No, or trying to make Obama fail.

On the surface it looks like a contradiction, but when you look deeper what it shows is that GOPe was not only out of touch but also only doing what it was in its own interest. It lost friends and made more enemies. Not a good strategy.
