Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District Board Trustee receives recall notice

Are you being served?

For that matter, are you being served by the members of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District board?

Because one of them got served tonight.

In the midst of a cantankerous public hearing in East County, at which the College Board ultimately held off — for now — on imposing a union-only Project Labor Agreement (PLA) on $398 million in publicly-funded improvements, Trustee Edwin Hiel was served with a notice of recall.

Although Hiel voted as part of a 3-2 majority to defer the PLA vote until after the District’s Bond Oversight Committee is able to review the matter, he still received a notification of intent to circulate petitions in support of his removal from office.

Hiel, part of a labor-backed board majority, was first elected in 2010 and re-elected last November. During tonight’s meeting, he spoke in favor of the union PLA before continuing the final vote.

In 2012 he voted with the rest of the current trustees to place on the ballot an ultimately successful bond measure, Prop V, which required fair and open competition on the District’s projects.

Those opposed to the PLA, including the San Diego County Taxpayers Association, say the PLA flies in the face of commitments the College District made to voters and in seeking community support for the measure.
