North County businessman Phil Graham today jumped in the race to replace Rocky Chavez in the 76th Assembly District, while announcing the support of Congressman Darrell Issa.

Jon Fleischman of FlashReport this morning has an interview with Graham, in which he stakes his claim as a free-market conservative.

The candidate also reached out to Rostra:

“As a political junkie who reads just about everything online and off, SD Rostra is one of my favorites for keeping up to date on the political scene in my home town of San Diego,” Graham said. “I look forward to updating Rostra readers on the progress of my campaign for Assembly.”

Graham joins Oceanside Councilman Jerry Kern in the race for the seat. Dan Hughes is also said to be considering a run. Current Assemblyman Chavez is running for U.S. Senate.

(Encinitas, CA) – Businessman and non-profit executive Phil Graham has announced his candidacy for the 76th State Assembly seat, currently held by Rocky Chavez, who is now running for U.S. Senate

Graham recently stepped down from his position at the La Jolla-based Sanford-Burnham Institute, a world-renowned leader in cancer research, to campaign full-time for the office.

“Sacramento is making it increasingly difficult for San Diego businesses to grow and create new jobs,” said Graham.  “I’ve spent the last several years working in life sciences and see first-hand how complicated the tax and regulatory demands are on this growing industry.  We need someone in Sacramento who understands this economy and what it means for economic growth, as well as the life-saving breakthroughs occurring to improve the lives of people around the world.”

Graham has already received the endorsement of Congressman Darrell Issa, whose district also includes Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad and Encinitas.  “Phil not only has a tremendous understanding of the state economy, but he also has an intricate understanding of our local economy and its needs,” said Issa, “Having someone like Phil representing North County, tackling the water issues and working to ensure we create a business friendly atmosphere that adds jobs to our economy is exactly who we need in Sacramento.  I look forward to working with him.”

Graham, a San Diego native, graduated from USC’s Marshall School of Business and received an MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management. After an international business career, which included seven years in Singapore, Graham turned his focus to life sciences and philanthropy.

“North County is a diverse and growing economy.  In Sacramento, I’ll focus on ensuring our infrastructure needs are met and that the current quality of life issues facing our region are addressed in a manner that protects our way of life,” said Graham.

Graham, who lives in Encinitas, has also volunteered for numerous local causes including the Founders Circle Board of the Preuss School at UCSD, the board of directors for Pedal the Cause, and as a guest lecturer at Rady’s School of Management at UCSD.
