Mark Powell, a 2012 candidate for the San Diego Unified School Board, recently had the article linked below published in the UT San Diego.
“To gain the trust of voters and decisively win more elections, the Republican Party must become more attractive to the electorate,” Mark tells SD Rostra. “Republicans must explore and identify all available venues and show their true face — the face of the Party of Lincoln.”

I actually was prepared to read the age-old New Generation “tired white men” pap we normally get from articles including the words “change” and “GOP.” However, Mr. Powell underscores something I too first noticed when I was participating in both the swearing in of my wife, then my mother-in-law for their respective citizenship ceremonies…..the Dems have a powerful “grab em’ up stream” approach to recruiting. Of course they also have an enticing inducement…free stuff…many immigrants, whether from Central America, the Former Soviet Union, or many countries in Asia, default to the tacit pitch by the Democrat Party that the level of “free stuff” in America, be it health care, food subsidies, education, housing, are still better than what they would have had to work for back home. Many are lured, unknowingly, to hand out programs and democratic-fueled and sponsored legislative programs that counter the idea of an entrepreneurial spirit or enticed by economic opportunity vice lured by hand outs and benefits. Many bring with them the ingrained construct that it is the “state” that is the provider. I witnessed this first hand at my last ceremony, where I translated for my mother-in-law as many dem operatives tried to skew the “free stuff” approach, while again tacitly inferring the Republicans don’t care for them, they are racist and anti-immigrant. I relished in the sweet irony as my mother-in-law now votes republican…
The “face of the party of Lincoln” was ripped off when the Southern Stategy was invoked. Founding Father: You might want to consider which great job creators are the beneficeries of food stamps and other assistance that is needed to make up the differance between their crappy wages and survival.
Hum, Southern Strategy…

Swing and a miss, Mr. Therrio….
However, your second point is a bit more complex (and perhaps cogent) than your first…the “crappy” wages may be accurate…of course those wanting more of the “evil” capitalists to pay more and more taxes, plus the “evil” industrialists needing to clean up the environment they ruin through regulation, and strangling OSHA and labor polices plus the helpful contributions of unions all add “thrust” to the economy, now don’t they. When the “smartest” president ever employed his economic policies and winning strategy for revitalizing the economy, plus the wildly successful implementation of Obama care have all contributed to that “thrust” so the wages might be more appealing, and business leaders , instead of “surviving” under the crushing weight of continued failing democratic government-centric policies, they could flourish in an environment friendly and supportive of free-market success.
Just a thought.
Having a GOP booth there is progress. When my wife was sworn in back in 2007 it was only Democrats there and people were swarming that booth. My wife registered GOP when we got home.
