Cap Alert Reports Garrick arrested on suspicion of drunken driving
Thursday, June 16, 2011

From Capitol Alert…
Ex Assembly GOP leader Martin Garrick arrested on suspicion of drunken driving
Garrick is termed out in 2012, with long term plans to run for Mark Wyland’s term-limited Senate seat, somewhat dependent on redistricting maps being finalized.

Sometimes those dog shows can be a little off the hook…
“Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway, R-Tulare, issued a statement saying she was unaware of details but “my heart and prayers go out to Mr. Garrick and his family during this difficult time. We all understand how serious these situations can be.”
WHAT!!! So, the party is hardcore on crime but when Garrick is the perpetrator of a crime that literally kills people they get all soft and caring? It’s one thing to denounce a crime and show empathy towards the family but this is crap. Call him on the carpet and beat him like you would anyone not in the “club”.
Voters don’t like double standards.
Drunky,
I’m with you. And voters don’t like hypocrisy either. Equal treatment under the law. But, that’s not the usual recommended treatment meted out by the GOP.
Yes, equal standards and equal treatment. And, no lame, unsubstantiated comments suggesting that unequal treatment is only meted out by the GOP. In reality, it is usually people in power, regardless of party, that somehow believe in unequal treatment when it applies to them and their cohorts.
Thor’s assistant:
So true, especially “people in power, regardless of party, that somehow believe in unequal treatment when it applies to them and their cohorts.” My comments are referring to folks just like Martin Garrick, R-Solana Beach.
Examples:
“…Republican leaders are not passing up their chance to show off their hypocrisy and double standard. House Majority Whip Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) and Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus are both calling for Weiner to resign his House seat.
Funny, both said they saw no reason for David Vitter (R-LA) to resign his Senate seat after he admitted to hiring a prostitute (a crime under Louisiana law) and repeatedly lying about it. Or for John Ensign (R-NV) to resign his Senate seat after he had an affair, with a subordinate, paid off her husband to keep it quiet, hired her son on his staff, and lied about everything. Or for Mark Sanford (R-SC) to resign the governorship after he flew off to visit his mistress in Argentina and lied repeatedly about it. All three had run for office under the family values banner.”

And, these politicians are still in office. Amazing.
While I think both were good bills, its a good thing Garrick is neither an illegal immigrant or underage drinker because he would have suffered even harsher penalties due to legislation he proposed to crack down on DUI offenders. Maybe this is why he didn’t propose bills to crack down on legal adult citizen DUI’s among his other public safety legislation…
2007 | AB 1385 – DUI Penalty Enhancement Bill (Garrick)
2008 | AB 1882 – DUI Notification (Garrick)
It’s “amazing” Gwendolyn does not know that Neither Mark Sandford, nor John Ensign, are “still in office”.
LOL
Mark Sandford was replaced by GOP Gov. Nikki Haley in January, Sen. John Ensign resigned last month, and Gov. Brian Sandoval named Republican Rep. Dean Heller to succeed Ensign.
David Vitter faced his constituents last year and was then reelected to the US Senate from Louisiana .
Got any stories for us about Anthony Weiner ?
Did Denise Moreno Ducheny resign when she got a DWI? Did the Democratic party punish her?
D7,
So what’s a DWI….Driving With Intent? New category just for Dems?
LOL
Let’s not play games over things that can easily be looked up with a simple web search. Driving Under the Influence and Driving While Intoxicated are both used pretty universally as terms to describe drunk driving…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driving_under_the_influence
Google it and you’ll find out. It’s been around for a while now and it has, for the most part, superceded DUI – particularly within the legal system.
Gwendolyn – What brought Weiner down was not the act of exposing himself on twitter, it was lying about it and trying to cover his tracks. That’s what caused weinergate to explode. Bad crisis management after the fact doomed him.
For Garrick, he was lucky that no one was injured from his actions. Also, he admitted it right away. As to equal treatment for equal crimes, I don’t think he or anyone else has called for him to suffer a lesser consequence than anyone else who gets a DUI.
Ever notice how quiet the Sac leadership was on this one?
